Why Horses?
Exhibitions 2009

The subject matter of much of my recent work has come from living on Exmoor. For many years I painted wilderness landscapes and coasts and more recently the horses, which have always been a part of my life.

I make drawings and paintings on location on a small scale, in watercolour and oil on paper and also take photographs. I use these studies as an indirect source of reference, back in the studio working on a larger scale, where the sketches act as catalysts for the paintings. I tend to work on canvas using an organic rabbitskin glue size which leaves the canvas a natural colour to work on, which I prefer. I choose to work in oil often combining this with charcoal as I find these the most versatile and expressive mediums.

The paintings are usually done in pairs or series and I will often work on four simultaneously, in this way they perform as individual pieces and also in relationship to each other, which I enjoy.
